Acupuncture as an Effective Treatment for Hay Fever

According to research conducted by Monash University and RMIT University, acupuncture is an effective treatment for hay fever. This Victorian-based clinical trial found that acupuncture can help relieve symptoms for up to four weeks after the treatment has ended.

The study included 175 participants with hay fever. Those who received acupuncture showed greater relief from sneezing and itching symptoms compared to those in the sham treatment group. Feedback from the acupuncture group indicated that the improvements lasted for four weeks after the treatments were completed.

Professor Frank Thien, one of the study’s authors and head of the Clinical Research Unit in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Monash University, noted that acupuncture is believed to trigger the body’s anti-inflammatory response.

He stated, “Acupuncture is an option that patients can consider, and we have shown it to be safe and effective.”

In Australia, up to 15% of the population suffers from hay fever. The symptoms can not only impair breathing but also disrupt sleep and reduce work productivity.

The study also suggests that patients consider receiving seasonal acupuncture treatment before peak hay fever season to prevent severe symptoms.
